The town is named after bridge's keepers (''most''=''bridge'') on the banks of the Neretva River. Mostar is known for it's Old bridge in the town center. That area was listed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 2005.
In Mostar, there are numerous constructions which were built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and which represent a good blend of Western and Oriental architecture (pseudo style). Mostar also has numerous mosques, that can be found in every neighborhood. They represent typical Ottoman style of architecture. They are small, but elegant structures that are definitely worth of visiting. They also represent the life and culture of the Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since 1968, water jump competition has been organized in Mostar. People from all different countries come to jump from the Old Bridge into the cold Neretva river. It has become traditional event and a tourist attraction.
