Antique Narona
Narona is around 60 kilometers away from Zivogosce Blato (direction map is attached below the text).
Village Vid is located near town Metkovic and it used to be a historical Roman settlement called Narona. Narona was the administrative and economic center of the south Dalmatia area during ancient time. The town had a big port on the Neretva River and the whole city was surrounded by walls. Next to Salona, it was the most important Roman town on the eastern coast of the Adriatic.
The remains of the Augusteum temple from the 1st century BC are preserved in Narona. The temple was dedicated to the first Roman Emperor Augustus who founded the imperial cult. That sensational discovery has happened during archeological exploration from 1995. to 1996. The most excited appearance was discovery of 16 statues among which dominated the statue of Emperor Augustus.
This is a unique discovery in the region of the former Roman empire, because it is the only temple which presents the entire review of the Roman imperial cult from its rise and expansion to its fall and demolition, that had happened at the end of the 4th century.
The discovery inspired the idea to make a first Archaeological Museum ''in situ'' in Croatia - the Museum was built on the same place where the remains of the ancient city of Narona have been discovered. Today, the Museum presents a great historical heritage of that area.
The main exhibition hall presents the architectural remains of a Roman temple. The statues of emperors and their family members are exposed there and they are the most spectacular exhibits in the Museum. The archaeological material, (fragments of sculptures, coins, glass, objects of metal and bone, ceramics and alfalfa) found in the wider area of the temple, is also exposed there. In the Museum, you can also visit a small archaeological park and the terraces with the stone monuments. At the end of the visit, ''in situ'' mosaic, that most likely belonged to the Roman Tavern, is presented under a glass floor.
In total, 900 protected and preserved unique exhibits are exposed in the Museum. Their presentation enables the most representative complex of antique town Narona to be experienced.
